The grandeur has its own spell.Most of us think that Homo sapiens is a creature of average size.Man, however, is one of the greatest living things on Earth; is bigger than 99 percent of animal species. There are only gorillas in primates that are bigger than us.
We can list many of the features that make us progress on the path to becoming the supreme species of this planet; our brains, upright position and walking,speech ,hungting with groups and even size of our bodies can be counted in that features. In all these features, the leading role belongs to our self-conscious. In this age of technology we live in, the dimensions of the machines are getting smaller and this is actually a very important detail in terms of their operation. However, this situation is not possible in nature, for example, neurons can not be reduced.
As the shrinker mobile phones become more complex, small animals are not more complicated than big ones, small animals are consists of less cells more then big ones. If there are hundreds of times more cells in the human brain than in the ants’ brain, that’s the only cause of this difference between the sizes of the bodies.
Speaking of ant and size difference, It is possible to expand our claim: It is imperative for people to have their present capabilities and functions in their present dimensions. But,why and how?
In F.W. Went’s “The Size Of Man” article this situation is emphasized both entertaining and striking.In the article it is described that it would be impossible for man to live if he was in the dimension of an ant. There is a very important difference between the world of big creatures and the world of small creatures, which is surface forces. The weight of an object grows much faster than the surface area; That is, the rate of surface volume in small animals is very high.
Let’s look at our Ant-Man.If we were just like an ant, because of the surface forces we talked about even if we could wear it, our clothes adhered to us and we could not remove it. As the drops of water could not be under a certain size, a drop of water would fly to the top of our man like a cannon ball! Let’s just say that he get wet ,the towel stuck if he try to be dried up… He could not built a fire because a stable flame could not be shorter than a few millimeters. Even though he made a book of his own by beating thin gold leaves, our man could not turn over the pages because of his bonding forces.
Our skills and behaviors are in a delicate harmony with the size of our bodies.
For example, if we were twice as long as we are now, the kinetic energy we will be subjected to when we fall is now 16 to 32 times higher than our present weight, which is 8 times over than our legs can lift. If we were about half the size of our present day, kinetic energy would have been reduced by 16 to 32 times, and this time we would not be able to chase and hunt animals! We could not produce any of the primitive tools we produced, nor could we bring our historical development to the level it is now. Perhaps this ins not the best planet but it is possible that restricting the influence of our size to this might have made it the best planet for us.
